Fun-filled Animal Adventure at the San Diego Zoo

Explore the vast animal kingdom at the San Diego Zoo, home to over 3,700 animals representing over 650 species and subspecies and 700,000 exotic plants! Located in lush Balboa Park, you can experience the zoo on foot, on a guided bus tour, aboard the Balboa Park miniature train, or by aerial tram. Choose your own animal adventure in the nine Animal Zones where you can see your favorite critters including pandas, lions, monkeys, elephants, and koalas! You will even discover exotic animals you never knew existed.

Zoo Shows

Be entertained at one of the Zoo’s fun shows including Camp Critters where you can sing along, the Dr. Zoolittle Show featuring live animals, and the Ice Age 4-D Experience for a larger-than-life thrill.

Safari Park

Located in nearby Escondido, Safari Park is an 1,800-acre wildlife sanctuary where you’ll find roughly 2,600 animals from over 300 different species. The sanctuary is also home to an incredible botanical collection of 1.5 million specimens. Enjoy live animal shows, explore animal habitats, take a guided tour aboard the Africa Tram, relax at one of the park’s unique restaurants.

  • What about the famous pandas?


    The San Diego Zoo is one of only four zoos in the US with giant pandas! Visit Panda Canyon where you can observe the zoo’s four giant pandas, including the overwhelmingly cute panda cub, Xiao Liwu, living in their natural habitat of a bamboo forest.
  • Are there gardens and plants to explore?


    Plant lovers will marvel at the 1,900 acres of gardens located at the Zoo and at Safari Park in nearby Escondido. Between the two locations, the botanical gardens have over 1.5 million species of exotic plants from all over the world. The Zoo has over 100 acres of lush gardens representing diverse climates and habitats including the Madagascar Garden, Sun Bear Forest, the Tropical Fruit Grove, Reptile Mesa, and the Tiger Trail.
