Every April through June, a Southern California tradition unfolds on the beaches of La Jolla. The Grunion Run is truly a sight to see, as hundreds of small fish flood the beach to spawn during the highest tides of spring. Birch Aquarium, San Diego is happy to host a series of informative evenings all about this strange phenomenon. For a small ticket fee, visitors receive a special presentation with actual hatching grunion, along with a front-row seat and hands-on opportunity to partake in the fish-out-of-water fun!

Can I Catch a Few Grunions?
Catching grunions is the best part about Grunion Runs! However, please keep in mind there are a series of restrictions on the act. No fishing license is required for children ages 15 and younger, and the tiny fish can only be caught by hand. No appliance or trap can be used to catch them either, including holes dug on the beach. While there’s no limit on the amount of fish you can keep, they must be taken for consumption or released, per California law.

What Should I Bring?
Plan on getting wet! The night air can be a bit chilly as well, so bring a towel to dry off, and perhaps a change of clothes. A flashlight and camera are also highly recommended.

After the Grunion Run, return back to our comfortable and convenient La Jolla Hotel, the Empress for a good night’s sleep!
